Renewable Energy Assurance Ltd (REAL) has published its second annual report for the Compost Certification Scheme providing an overview of the scheme in 2017.

In summary, there was a total of 174 certified composting processes in the UK in December 2017. Approximately 2,660,000 tonnes of green waste only was being processed by certified sites on an annual basis and approximately 1,211,000 tonnes of green waste mixed with animal by-product materials. Collectively, certified sites were producing approximately 1,577,000 tonnes of quality compost on an annual basis.

In this report, we also present the proportion of certified to non-certified compost sites using data collected in March from the environmental regulators (with the exception of NRW). In March 2018, 55% of compost sites in Northern Ireland were certified through the Compost Certification Scheme. In Scotland, 70% of compost sites with waste management licenses were certified and in England, 45% of all permitted compost sites were certified.

This report also presents an overview of the Biofertiliser Certification Scheme in 2017 and updates on the Green Gas Certification and Compostable Packaging Certification Scheme, also owned and administered by REAL. You can read the full Certification Schemes' Annual Report 2017 on our website here.
